Where your money goes

Caring in Bristol is a local charity, with the benefit of your support having a direct impact in the city. Every day we take action to support people and communities facing the pressure of a homelessness emergency. Our donors join our mission, enabling us to provide specialist advice, information, support, and resources to support people across the city to turn lives around. We won't stop until homelessness is a thing of the past; your support powers our work for lasting change.

Not just Christmas!

Many people first encounter our work through our Caring at Christmas project, now heading towards four decades of vital support and kindness for people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity over Christmas Week. It's supported by amazing people like you. It's how we started, and although it's the largest project of its kind in the southwest, it's just a small part of our work over every single day or night throughout the year.

Young people finding hope

Thanks to our caring supporters, our team of youth practitioners are able to support young people who have faced the trauma of homelessness. The Project Z team enable young people navigate complex housing and support systems. They help them to address issues that impact on their wellbeing, and plan for their future, including a stable and permanent home.

Year round support

In one year, the team have...

  • Supported 121 young people with individualised support, often through complex situations.
  • Organised training and wellbeing sessions.
  • Worked with our Bristol Goods project to deliver a food and social drop in.

Z House Emergency Shelter

Without the support of our amazing donors, we wouldn't have been able to open and run the shelter, opened in 2024, lifting young people out of rough sleeping and risky situations. It had instant impact; in its first year, 803 bed spaces were provided, with young people staying 44.5 nights on average before they identified and found appropriate housing with our support. The shelter is now busier than ever...

Preventing Homelessness

We know that early interventions can prevent individuals and families from experiencing the disaster of homelessness. It's not inevitable, but this depends on our teams being able to identify where our support is needed. Your donations enable our supportive work across our whole organisation...

Our Early Doors project supports individuals to avoid or solve urgent homelessness situations. The team have successfully overturned unethical evictions, addressed precarious or unfit housing, and challenged unfairness that puts people's tenancies at risk. In just one year they reached 543 people, and 93% said had a positive outcome from an early intervention, and increased housing rights knowledge with the confidence to act on it.

In just one year, our outreach coordinator reached 61 organisations, attended 130 events, and provided vital knowledge about homelessness and housing insecurity to 626 people and 327 volunteers.

The Early Doors team have set up residents' co-production groups, to increase community knowledge of homelessness and housing issues, bringing them together to identify issues and find solutions. Training has been provided, for example, on navigating the social housing system, and accessing the Housing Ombudsman service. They have also identified gaps in provision, and successfully worked to bridge them. See one of the groups in this video...

Housing Advice Drop-ins

Every week our Early Doors project holds a community-based drop-in to enable residents get quick and effective advice to tackle housing and homelessness worries. These are delivered alongside our expert partners from Housing Matters and Shelter Bristol. The sessions are trusted, well-attended, and much-needed.

We know that there is a link between poverty and homelessness. Supporting our Bristol Goods food project is an effective way to break that link, helping people to avoid homelessness. It's also valuable support for people who are rebuilding their lives after a period of homelessness.

Good Food Does Good

Our Bristol Goods pop-up shops are different to food banks. They provided choice, dignity, and the additional support and advice needed to push back against homelessness and precarious housing conditions. They strengthen community and reduce isolation. They also mean that good quality food is diverted from waste streams. 10 tons reached 267 people in just one year; we know that good food does good!
