Volunteer serving food at Bristol Goods pop up shop

Bristol Goods

As part of our homelessness prevention initiatives, we run two pop-up food clubs in Hartcliffe and Hengrove. These give people who may be experiencing housing insecurity or living in sub-standard dwellings access to inexpensive, good quality foods at a very low cost. Whilst they are there, we give support, information, and advice to empower people to improve their housing situation. There are three ways you can get involved with the Bristol Goods Food Club...

1. Pick and Pack

This role is perfect for people who love to sort through supplies and donations and prepare food for our weekly clubs and is based in the Julian Trust. The shift is just over two hours from 10:45 – 1:00 pm each Tuesday and Wednesday. This role involves

  • Preparing the produce
  • Collecting food from our suppliers in our Caring in Bristol van

(driving is not a requirement)

  • Pre-packing bulk items
  • Stocking the crates
  • Loading and unloading the van

This role requires a level of lifting (If this is an issue for you, we have jobs that are not physical.) This shift is a great way to get a full understanding of how the project is pulled together and where the food comes from. You will be key in preparing all the crates for up to 80 households over the two clubs.

This is a weekly sort and clean of our food hub. It only takes a couple of hours from 9:30 – 11:30am on Mondays and jobs include:

  • Sorting of the food pantry
  • Working through donations
  • Clean of hub and van
  • Grading produce

The Food Clubs are used by 80 households a week and is a busy and vibrant environment.  We are looking for people who have an understanding, potentially lived experience or are interested in learning about food distribution to people experiencing food insecurity. This role specifically supports the delivery from 4:00pm – 6:00pm on Tuesdays in Hartcliffe and Wednesdays in Hengrove and involves:

  • A quick briefing at the beginning
  • Helping set up the room and tables
  • Loading and unloading crates of food and displaying items on tables and shelves
  • Chatting to members of the food clubs and assisting with their food choices
  • Clearing away the food club at the end
  • Check-in at the end of the session to give any feedback or access support

Living area and Youth Hub for our Shelter

Z House

Z House provides overnight accommodation for young people (18-25) at risk of or experiencing homelessness with low support needs. The project aims to provide stable overnight accommodation for young people as they work towards a move-on goal. The project will work with the young people staying at Z House to help them build the skills, knowledge and resources necessary to move onto stable and secure accommodation. The volunteer roles that support this service are dynamic and will change depending on the young people we are supporting. We are particularly looking for people who have worked with young people before or those who are looking to move into or are in social work. We would also welcome applications from people who speak foreign languages. We have two roles...

1. Night Support Volunteer

Based in the city centre, this shift involves sleeping overnight, staying up till 11:30pm to support the Night Worker, and supporting young people to get up and out of the bedroom area between 7:00am and 8:00am. The volunteer will also complete any house duties and safety checks that are needed for that specific day.

2. Breakfast Volunteer

This shift starts at 7:30am at the Inner-city Night Shelter. The role involves making breakfast and lunches for young people, if they would like this, and completing any house duties and safety checks that are needed for that specific day. This shift finishes at 9:00am so a good one for before you head to work!

Events Volunteer

Caring in Bristol are involved in events throughout the year and the common theme amongst all of them is they’re FUN! They range from gigs and festivals, including Bristol Pride and The Caring Comedy Club through to football matches and charity fundraising events.

We have a range of roles from logistics, meet and greet, bucket collecting through to talking to people about the good work we do.  Each event will have its own specific requirements, and you’ll be fully briefed before each shift so that you know exactly what is needed. We will endeavour to find the right role for you whether it is out with public or behind the scenes!

If you are keen on volunteering for any of our events throughout the year, you do not need to apply through the Volunteer Portal at this stage. Please email your interest to [email protected] and we can have a chat about what you’re looking for and what events we have.

Our next event is in spring this year and is the brilliant and bold Inflatable 5k! (Have a look HERE for more details.) We would love volunteers to come along and support with running the event.
